Column definitions
Characteristic Value
A dormakaba-internal configuration code that encodes a specific combination of product variant attributes — for example 5L7RD2626 or M002-ESNB-PSTNB-11R. This is the code you enter to look up a material number.
SAP source: table ZVC_EAN_NR, column Characteristic Value.
Open Material Variant / SKU (OMATVAR)
The SAP material number assigned to a specific configured product variant — for example 7142337. This is the number used to create sales orders, purchase orders, and inventory records in SAP. It is the primary output of this tool.
SAP source: table ZVC_EAN_NR, column OMATVAR.
Configurable Material (Conf. matl)
The parent product number — for example 7000200. It represents the product family or base model. Multiple Open Material Variants (specific configurations) roll up under a single Configurable Material.
SAP source: table ZVC_EAN_NR, column Conf. matl.
Origin (EAN-Nr Herkunft)
Indicates how the record was created in SAP:
L— manually entered or batch-uploaded (most common)M— automatically generated by SAP
SAP source: table ZVC_EAN_NR, column EAN-Nr Herkunft.
Usage (EAN NR-Verw)
Indicates whether the record is active. A value of X means the characteristic value is currently assigned and in use. An empty or different value may indicate the record is inactive or pending.
SAP source: table ZVC_EAN_NR, column EAN NR-Verw.
Description
The product description associated with the Configurable Material — for example Configurable Cabinet Lock. It describes the product family, not the specific variant. All Open Material Variants under the same Configurable Material share the same description.
Key differences
Characteristic Value vs. UPC / GTIN barcode
These are entirely different identifiers:
- A UPC (Universal Product Code) or GTIN (Global Trade Item Number) is an internationally standardized barcode number assigned by GS1, used at retail point of sale — for example
887838144577. It is globally unique across all companies. - A Characteristic Value is a dormakaba-internal alphanumeric code encoding product configuration. It has no meaning outside dormakaba's SAP environment and is not a barcode.
In SAP table ZVC_EAN_NR the EAN/UPC column holds the actual barcode — a separate field from the Characteristic Value.
Open Material Variant / SKU (OMATVAR) vs. SKU
A SKU (Stock Keeping Unit) is a generic business term for any internal product identifier used in inventory management. An OMATVAR is dormakaba's specific SAP implementation of that concept — the precise material number for a configured product variant. Both terms refer to the same thing in this context, but OMATVAR is the correct SAP field name to use when entering orders.
Configurable Material vs. Open Material Variant
Think of it as a parent–child relationship:
- The Configurable Material (e.g.
7000200) is the product family — the base model that can be configured in many ways. - The Open Material Variant (e.g.
7142337) is one specific, fully-defined configuration of that family. Each unique combination of options (finish, size, function, etc.) gets its own OMATVAR.
When placing an order in SAP, you always use the OMATVAR, not the Configurable Material number.
Using the search
How do I use Single Search?
Go to the Single Search tab. Type or paste a Characteristic Value (e.g. 5L7RD2626) into the search box and press Enter or click the search icon. The result appears in the Results tab showing the OMATVAR, Configurable Material, Description, Origin, and Usage. Use Copy SKU to copy the OMATVAR to your clipboard.
How do I use Bulk Search?
Go to the Bulk Search tab. You can either:
- Upload a file — drag and drop or click to browse a
.txtor.csvfile with one Characteristic Value per line. - Paste codes — paste directly into the text area, separated by new lines, commas, semicolons, or tabs.
Click Run Bulk Search. Results open in the Results tab showing all matches and not-found codes. From there you can Export CSV or Copy Table.
What does "multiple matches" mean and what should I do?
A small number of Characteristic Values (~614 out of 149,148) map to more than one Open Material Variant. This can happen when the same configuration code was associated with multiple SAP material numbers over time. When a multi-match is returned, review all results and confirm the correct OMATVAR with your SAP team before placing an order.
What should I do if my code is not found?
If a Characteristic Value returns Not found:
- Double-check spelling — search is case-insensitive but the code must otherwise match exactly.
- Make sure you are entering a Characteristic Value (e.g.
5L7RD2626), not an EAN/UPC barcode number (e.g.887838144577). - The code may be new and not yet in the database — verify it exists in SAP table ZVC_EAN_NR with your SAP team.
